about
Ajla Aksamija, PhD, LEED AP BD+C, CDT, FTI Fellow is a Professor and Chair of the School of Architecture at the University of Utah. Her research interests include building science and sustainability, emerging technologies, digital design and representations, and innovations in architecture. She has worked on developing building analysis and modeling applications, implementation of novel materials in architectural design, development of computational models, and has collaborated with researchers from material science, civil and environmental engineering, and computational design. Her extensive professional background includes Perkins&Will, where she directed Building Technology Laboratory (“Tech Lab”), one of the first practice-driven architectural research laboratories. Her professional work includes complex building types, such as healthcare facilities, higher-education buildings, research laboratories, schools, commercial and civic buildings. She also worked at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Construction Engineering Research Laboratory. Prior to joining the University of Utah, she was a Professor at the Department of Architecture at the University of Massachusetts Amherst.
Dr. Aksamija authored three books, Research Methods for the Architectural Profession (Routledge, 2021), Integrating Innovation in Architecture: Design, Methods and Technology for Progressive Practice and Research (John Wiley & Sons, 2016), and Sustainable Facades: Design Methods for High-Performance Building Envelopes (John Wiley & Sons, 2013). Her book on sustainable facades was translated to Chinese language (China Architecture and Building Press, 2018). She contributed to several other books; has written numerous research articles and invited papers, and has presented at various national and international conferences. She was the founder and editor of the Perkins&Willl Research Journal for fourteen years. This open-access, peer-reviewed journal is one of the first research journals coming from the architectural practice. She currently serves as the President of the Facade Tectonics Institute.
