Each issue of Dialectic takes fifteen months from the
inception of the theme to its current form. During
this period its editors accumulate imprints of many
interlocutors, colleagues, staff, students, and friends.
We cannot thank the contributing authors enough for
their willing and enthusiastic engagement with a process
that required numerous exchanges and revisions. Their
engagement reflects a mutual commitment to the topic
at hand and to positively changing the field as we know
it. We would also like to thank Ole W. Fischer and B. D.
Wortham-Galvin for their input on the issue from day
one and their advisory role at each stage of the process.
Thanks are also due to Kenny Cupers, Ipek Tureli, Yael
Allweil, Thomas Mical, and Sharone Tomer for their
thoughtful comments on an early draft of the call. Initial
conversations on this issue were supported by Portland
State University’s Distinguished Visiting Professor
program, which generously brought Shundana Yusaf to
Portland. Thanks are also due to Mimi Locker who has
encouraged the journal as an inspiration for curriculum
revision at the University of Utah, School of Architecture.
Sam Ball has been a consistent and hardworking addition
to the team, organizing submission and producing the
layout and cover design. Thank you to Jackie McFarland
for granting us permission to use his artwork for
the cover and for his own thinking on the Eurocentric
nature of the architectural profession. Finally, we’d like
to thank our anonymous reviewers for their deep and
helpful engagements with the texts, without which we
would not have been able to present such a clear and
diverse showing of ideas and approaches.
Anna Goodman and Shundana Yusaf
Dialectic is the journal of the School of Architecture at the University of Utah. In the spirit of dialectical thinking, the journal brings together distinct voices in the discipline today on issues, values, methods and debates most important to the community of educators at the University of Utah and beyond nationally and globally. It supports the most pertinent scholarship on the issues at hand.
Themes for each issue arise from concerns that inform our teaching in studios, lectures and seminars alike. Dialectic publishes some of the best student works of the year related to the chosen theme and provide an editorial commentary on them. This should theorize and showcase the fruits of pedagogic practices prevalent in the University of Utah and invite comparison with practices elsewhere.
This makes Dialectic a critical venue for articulating our positions on the challenges and opportunities for architects in the highly interconnected, yet tragically disconnected world of contemporary practice. This kind of incessant self-inquiry and self-reflection makes the journal a vital force in the continued education of faculty and students while supporting the evolution of the school’s pedagogic mission. Dialectical and comparative analysis broadens our horizons and add criticality to our strategies. More importantly, it gives us and our concerns, a prominent voice in the space of global disciplinary ideas. Equally important to the mission of the journal is to attract a newer generation of undergraduate and graduate students from across the world, by offering them a much more sophisticated understanding of the kind of training we offer at the University of Utah and how it compares to competing schools.
