Anne G. Mooney, AIA, NCARB, LEED AP is a Professor in the School of Architecture who, prior to joining the faculty at the University of Utah, taught design studios at institutions in Los Angeles. She was educated in architecture at Columbia University and the Southern California Institute of Architecture where she graduated with Distinction. Anne is the co-founder of Sparano + Mooney Architecture, an award-winning design firm with projects including cultural and community centers, transit and public works projects and private residences. Her creative work has been internationally recognized for its research-based conceptual approach to architecture and has been featured in over 50 publications. Anne is a licensed architect and a LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Accredited Professional and serves on a number of boards and committees, including the Board of Directors of AIA Utah. She is the co-chair of the AIA COTE (Committee on the Environment) and the AIA BEC (Building Enclosure Council).
Environmental Resilience
The architectural works authored by Anne Mooney embrace the ethos of environmental resilience in a variety of ways including passive design, sustainable site and planning strategies, energy efficiency building design, renewable energy systems for heating and cooling architecture, and low impact building materials and systems. Anne is a LEED accredited professional and has produced LEED certified completed projects, including award-winning design work earning both Silver and Gold levels of LEED Certification.
Inter-disciplinary Collaboration
Professor Mooney’s work involves regular collaboration with designers, architects, engineers, technical consultants, contractors, public and private clients and communities in the planning, design and execution of architectural solutions to address complex challenges. Her current collaborations include national and international teams of professionals on projects ranging in scale from a book to a city plan.
Design Excellence
The creative work from her practice Sparano + Mooney Architecture has been recognized with dozens of awards for design excellence at the local, state, regional, national and international levels. Her architectural designs have been featured in a number of books and in national and international publications including The Wall Street Journal, the New York Times, World Architecture, Architecture + Urbanism, Dwell, The Architect’s Newspaper, Aspire, Bauwelt, LA Architect, California Architect, Domus, L’Arca, The Plan and Western Art & Architecture.
Community Engagement
Professor Mooney’s academic and creative work is firmly grounded in community engagement. Her Applied Research Design Studios work collaboratively with local neighborhood and community groups, non-profits and civic groups to develop visionary design proposals to address broad needs and challenges through creative critical thinking. Her professional work has involved developing and leading community outreach and engagement efforts with municipal agencies and non-profit groups.
