Dr. Abrahamson and Dr. Malaia Lead SoA Students on a Study Trip in Germany

A group of 31 students from the School of Architecture traveled to Berlin and Dessau, Germany, with Assistant Professors Michael Abrahamson and Kateryna Malaia, during spring break 2025 for an architecture learning abroad course. Students took four days of tours across Berlin on foot and via public transit, planned by the instructors to cover wide range of historical and contemporary buildings, with a special focus on the contrast between East and West German architecture during the Cold War period and on reconstruction and memorialization after the fall of the Berlin Wall. A day trip to nearby Dessau allowed students to experience one of the most important monuments of twentieth-century modernism, the Bauhaus. Time was set aside each day for students to sketch, and awards for the best sketches were given upon the group’s return to Salt Lake.
