Bachelor Pathways in Architecture
Program Details
The Bachelor of Arts in Architectural Studies (BAAS) is an undergraduate degree that prepares students for careers in architecture and related fields, as well as advanced standing in the 3+ Master of Architecture (M.Arch) program. This interdisciplinary degree plan encompasses a broad range of topics, including design, sustainability, materials, construction, and the social, cultural, and environmental factors that influence our environment. Students learn to see architecture as a creative and complex field connected to many areas of study. This degree also allows students to focus their electives on a specific interest or add a minor outside the School of Architecture to support a more diverse educational experience.
The Bachelor of Science in Architectural Studies (BSAS) is an undergraduate, pre-professional degree in architecture that provides a well-rounded academic foundation from which an individual might develop pre-professional competencies for entry-level employment in the architecture industry. The BSAS curriculum consists of a sequence of design studios, architectural history and theory classes, building technology and structures, design communications, professional practice and elective courses.
Note: Both the BAAS and BSAS degrees are pre-professional degrees.

Academic Advising
First-year Architectural Studies
During the first year(s), students will complete a series of prerequisite courses exploring architecture, design, and urban planning concepts while building the necessary skills to be successful in future classes. Students complete lecture, studio, and workshop courses while building relationships among their future cohorts and college faculty. Upon completion of the prerequisite courses, students apply for placement into either the BA or BS programs. Applications for placement into both programs are open once per year, in the spring semester, with decisions being released by the end of May. Students may apply to both programs as long as all necessary prerequisites are complete.
Transfer Students
Transfer students to the School of Architecture are eligible to apply for placement into the M1 (sophomore) or M2 (junior) BA or BS cohorts based on their prior completed coursework. Students from Salt Lake Community College who have completed the AS in Architecture are automatically eligible for application into the BS M2 cohort. Students transferring from SLCC who have not completed the AS, or students transferring from other institutions, should contact Sam Dalton, Architecture Academic Advisor, to discuss a transfer evaluation. Students should reach out regarding transfer no less than 1 month before the application deadline for assistance.

Program Placement
For First-year Applicants:
Beginning in Fall 2026, students who have completed the Design Foundations course requirements who apply to the undergraduate architecture program will be considered for one or more of the following degrees:
Bachelor of Science in Architectural Studies (BSAS) – pre-professional degree that prepares graduates for placement in 2-year Master of Architecture professional programs
Bachelor of Arts in Architectural Studies (BAAS) – liberal-arts focused degree that prepares graduates for advanced placement in 3+ Master of Architecture professional programs as well as provides exploration in alternative career paths in related disciplines. This is a new degree expected to begin in Fall 2026 contingent on final approval from the university).
Applicants have the option in the admission form to indicate if they want to be considered for one or both degrees. Only those students who have successfully completed Math 1210 (Calculus 1) and Physics 2010 (Physics 1) by the end of the Summer 2026 semester will be eligible for placement in the BSAS program.
For Second-year Transfer Applicants:
For the 2026-27 academic year, transfer students will continue to automatically be considered for admission into the third year of the Bachelor of Science in Architectural Studies program only. We anticipate developing an option for placement into the third year of the Bachelor of Arts program in the next 1-2 years.
